Obituary of Desmond O'Hagan

O'Hagan, Desmond John. Born in Hell's Kitchen, NY, raised in Syosset and longtime resident of Freeport, NY, died on March 26, 2017 at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Mary Jo (Gunshannon). Adored father of Heather Bowes (Richard) and Michael (Kristine). Grandfather of Ciara, Declan, Kasey, and Sean, who were the light of his life. Brother of Una DeGeorge, brother in law of Helen O'Hagan, also survived by eight nephews and nieces, and five grandnieces. Brother of the late Frank and Alice O'Hagan. "Des", as he was known to everyone, was a Navy diver during the Korean conflict. When he came home, he earned a BS from LIU and went to work for the Trane Company. Des left the corporate world when he was discovered on the streets of Manhattan by the head of a modeling agency. Commercials, both print and TV, followed, until he finally settled on a career behind the camera as a broadcast engineer for WABC-TV. An all around athlete, he played high school football for the Hicksville Comets, tried out for the Yankees, life guarded at TOBAY beach, and was an avid skier well into his sixties. Longtime member of AA, Des made friends everywhere he went. If you asked anyone who knew him, the response was always the same, "Des is the best." Reposing at Hungerford and Clark Inc. Funeral Home, 110 Pine Street, Freeport, NY, Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral Mass Friday 9:45am at Our Holy Redeemer RC Church. Cremation Private.
